Elbow Pad for Conservative Treatment of Ulnar Neuropathy

If you have been diagnosed with an ulnar neuropathy caused by compression of the nerve at the elbow, we may have discussed the use of a brace around the elbow at night.  The purpose is to keep the elbow straight, which is the position of least stretch of the nerve.  The brace should not be so tight fitting as to cause a compression of its own, or cut off circulation.  Here is a brace that I have been suggesting.  It is an athletic elbow pad commonly found at sporting goods stores.  I suggest wearing it at night only.  Stop wearing it if your symptoms worsen, or you don't like it.  Otherwise, if you can tolerate it, give it a few weeks trial.

ONE MAJOR ADJUSTMENT:

Turn the brace so that the pad on the inside, not against the elbow.  This way the pad will keep you from flexing your arm and thus keep the arm straight while you sleep.  Make sure the elbow pad is not so tight that it cuts off the circulation.
