Diet and Autoimmune Disease

I suggest the same diet for all my patients with autoimmune related diseases.  There have been a number of studies looking into the treatment these diseases using a low-fat plant-based diet.   There have been studies looking at multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and other diseases.  Many studies suggest benefit.  While it may be debated whether these studies are top quality in terms of controlling for the placebo effect and other variables, it can be stated clearly that this diet is safe and healthy.  This diet is the same one that has been studied extensively in the prevention of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.  This is the same diet that has shown reversal of coronary artery disease.  It is based on foods associated with a lowered risk of cancer, dementia and stroke.   I think it is worth trying.   If it doesn't work for your autoimmune disease, at least it will help protect you from other diseases.  I don't have a medication that can make that claim.

I am recommending a plant based diet like those suggested by Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. McDougall and Dr. Barnard. I believe it is easier to follow than the diet suggested by Dr. Swank.  As well, I think it is more healthy in general with respect to lowering the risks of other diseases.
